About Reflexology

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is an ancient form of therapy, originating around 5,000 years ago in India, China, Japan and Egypt. Present day reflexology was introduced to the West in 1913 by an American surgeon Dr.William Fitzgerald. He developed the zone theory of the human body, and discovered that pressure applied to one part of the body could anaesthetise another.

In the 1930's a physiotherapist named Eunice Ingham further developed this theory. She mapped the entire body onto the feet and discovered that applying pressure on the various parts of the foot had therapeutic effects on corresponding parts of the body.

Reflexology is carried out mainly on the feet but can also be carried out on the hands.

Reflexology #02How does it work?

Reflexology is a complementary therapy, which may facilitate the healing of the physical and emotional body. Through specific pressure massage of reflexes on the feet, corresponding to particular parts of the body, reflexology may help towards good physical, mental and emotional health.

It is thought that reflexology works by involving some or all of the following processes;

  • deep muscle relaxation and the relief of tension and stress

  • an improvement in cardiovascular and lymphatic circulation

  • the reduction of pain through the release of endorphins

  • stimulation of key points on the acupuncture meridians

  • the benefits of an hour's rest, stillness and quiet

  • the psychological benefits of an hour's personal attention and care

    What Conditions Can it Help?

    Reflexology is known to help many conditions including;

  • arthritic conditions
  • asthma
  • back pain
  • constipation
  • depression
  • skin conditions
  • fluid retention
  • head aches
  • sinus problems
  • high blood pressure
  • irritable bowel syndrome
  • menopausal problems
  • circulatory problems
  • insomnia

    What Benefits can be Expected?

    Overall, reflexology reduces stress and induces deep relaxation, improves circulation and lymph flow, cleanses the body of impurities, creates homeostasis (a natural balance within the body), revitalizes energy and aids concentration.

    Reflexology is an art and science that deals with the principle that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to all of the glands, organs and parts of the body.

    Reflexology is a unique method of using the thumb and fingers on these reflex areas in order to support nature in maintaining homeostasis, as far as may be achieved for each individual. It does this by stimulating the reflex areas which may help to relieve stress and tension, improve the blood supply to all areas of the body and promote the correct functioning of nerve impulses.

    Reflexology aims to treat the imbalances of each individual and to alleviate and improve symptoms. It does not however diagnose a specific medical problem. The Reflexologist is not medically trained and cannot prescribe or alter medication. Reflexology does not treat a specific condition.
